Festivals & seasons through the year
The calendar that repeats every year — flower seasons, winter birds, river fireworks and the big fairs. Months are typical; exact dates are confirmed each year.
October
Gan River fireworks galas赣江烟花晚会 — Typically Jan – Feb, Oct · Gan River, central Nanchang (赣江(市中心段)) · Free · Festivals · No language barrier. Nanchang fires its two big fireworks galas over the Gan River on Lunar New Year’s Day and on National Day, 1 October — not on 31 December. Times and the best riverbank spots are announced shortly before each show.
Huangling autumn sun-drying season篁岭晒秋 — Typically Sep – Nov · Huangling Village, Wuyuan (婺源篁岭) · Seasons & nature · No language barrier. Each autumn the hillside village of Huangling in Wuyuan spreads chillies, corn and other harvest crops on round bamboo trays across its rooftops, turning the whole slope into a patchwork of red and gold.
Jingdezhen International Ceramic Fair中国景德镇国际陶瓷博览会 — Typically Oct · Jingdezhen Taobo City Expo Center (main venue) (景德镇陶博城国际会展中心) · Expos & fairs · No language barrier. Jingdezhen, China’s porcelain capital, holds its international ceramics fair every October: halls of new and traditional porcelain, plus side venues and studio events across the city.
World VR Industry Conference世界VR产业大会 — Typically Oct · Expos & fairs. Nanchang is the permanent host of the World VR Industry Conference, a trade gathering on virtual reality and related technology that is usually held in October.
Tang Xianzu Theatre Festival汤显祖戏剧节 — Typically Sep – Nov · Festivals · Chinese-language. Fuzhou, south-east of Nanchang, honours its native playwright Tang Xianzu with a theatre festival most autumns. Most performances are in Chinese, and the dates change from year to year.
November
Poyang Lake winter bird season鄱阳湖候鸟越冬季 — Typically Nov – Mar · Poyang Lake wetlands (鄱阳湖湿地) · Seasons & nature · No language barrier. Every winter Siberian cranes and huge flocks of other migratory birds settle on the Poyang Lake wetlands around Nanchang. The season runs roughly November to March; mid-December to February is the most reliable window.
Nanchang Marathon南昌马拉松 — Sun 15 Nov 2026 · Bayi Square (start) (八一广场) · Sports · No language barrier. Nanchang’s big road race, with a full and a half marathon, starts from Bayi Square in the city centre. It is usually held in November.
Nanchang chrysanthemum show南昌菊花展 — Typically Nov – Dec · Seasons & nature · No language barrier. Nanchang’s long-running autumn chrysanthemum show usually opens in early November and runs into early December, with themed flower displays.
January
Chinese New Year in Nanchang南昌过年 — Typically Jan – Feb · Festivals · No language barrier. Chinese New Year brings flower markets, lanterns and family reunions to Nanchang, capped by the Gan River fireworks gala on Lunar New Year’s Day. Expect crowds at the big sights and some small shops closed for the first few days.
March
Fenghuanggou cherry blossom season凤凰沟樱花季 — Typically Mar – Apr · Fenghuanggou Scenic Area (凤凰沟) · Seasons & nature · No language barrier. Cherry trees line the lanes of Fenghuanggou, a working provincial farm south of Nanchang, for a few weeks each spring. The park usually opens the season in early March; the blossom peaks in mid-to-late March.
Wuyuan rapeseed flower season婺源油菜花季 — Typically Mar – Apr · Wuyuan County (婺源县) · Seasons & nature · No language barrier. For two or three weeks each spring the terraces around Wuyuan’s white-walled Huizhou villages turn gold with rapeseed (canola) flowers — roughly mid-March to early April, a little later on higher ground.
May
Dragon Boat Festival races端午龙舟赛 — Typically May – Jun · Festivals · No language barrier. Around the Dragon Boat Festival — the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, in late May or June — Nanchang holds dragon-boat races on its rivers and lakes.
July
Lushan summer escape season庐山避暑季 — Typically Jul – Aug · Guling, Lushan (庐山牯岭镇) · Seasons & nature · No language barrier. When Nanchang’s summer climbs into the high 30s, Lushan’s summit town of Guling can be around 10°C cooler — the reason this mountain became one of China’s classic hill stations. July and August are peak season, so book early.
How we pick events
We include:
Concerts and gigs by touring or well-known artists, in any genre
Theatre, dance, acrobatics, classical music and Chinese opera — Chinese-language shows are flagged
Exhibitions at museums and galleries that run for at least a week
Festivals, temple fairs, lantern and light shows, fireworks and flower seasons
Sports you can watch or join, from the Nanchang Marathon to dragon-boat races
Family-friendly events, and the big trade fairs business travellers ask about
Elsewhere in Jiangxi: festival-level events only
We leave out daily small-room shows with no end date, Chinese-language talk shows, meetups, classes and promotions — and anything whose date or venue we can't confirm.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I buy tickets for events in Nanchang as a foreigner?
Most listings link to the organiser's ticket page on a Chinese platform such as ShowStart (秀动) or Damai (大麦). Large concerts in China are sold under real-name rules: each ticket is tied to one ID document, and staff check it at the gate, so book with the passport you will carry. Whether a platform accepts a passport for online purchase varies — check the ticket page before you pay, or ask your hotel to help. Some livehouse gigs also sell tickets at the door, usually for a little more than the advance price.
Are these events in English?
Very few are. Music, dance, exhibitions, sport and festivals work fine without Chinese — look for the “No language barrier” tag. Stand-up comedy, crosstalk and spoken drama are in Chinese, so we leave most of them out.
How do I get to the venue?
Every event page shows the venue's Chinese name and address with a copy button — paste it into DiDi or show it to a taxi driver. The map link opens Amap (高德地图), the map app most people in China use.
How up to date is this calendar?
We check our listing sources every week and add new events after a manual review; past events drop off automatically. Dates and prices can still change, so confirm on the official or ticket page before you go.
Can I suggest an event?
Yes — email info@hellonanchang.com with the event name, date, venue and an official link, ideally two weeks ahead. We list events that suit visitors to Nanchang; see “How we pick events” on this page.
Dates, prices and line-ups can change. Always confirm on the official or ticket page before you travel.
