Honggutan, on the west bank of the Gan River, is the part of Nanchang that looks most like a 21st-century city, and Nanchang MixC (南昌万象城) — opened in 2022 — is its glossy centrepiece. It is the city's largest and most international shopping mall: where locals take out-of-town guests, where teenagers spend Saturdays, and where families go to escape the summer heat. For a visitor, it's the most comfortable few hours of indoor Nanchang you can have — and a clear window into how the city's middle class actually lives and shops.

It also has one trick a downtown mall can't match: it opens straight onto the river. Step out the western side and you're at the foot of the Star of Nanchang (南昌之星), the 160-metre Ferris wheel that was briefly the tallest in the world, with a free riverside park and Nanchang's nightly skyline light show stretching away along the water. So this is mostly a guide to the mall — what's inside, how to use it, what to buy — with the wheel and the riverfront as the natural way to round off the afternoon.

What is Nanchang MixC

MixC (万象城) is China Resources Land's premium shopping-mall brand, the same group that operates the flagship MixCs in Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and Chengdu. The Nanchang branch opened on 1 October 2022 at the southwest corner of Ganjiang South Avenue and Xuefu Avenue, in the southern part of Honggutan District. It is a single, large, modern complex — not a knot of side streets — covering roughly 270,000 m² of total floor area with about 160,000 m² of retail space across four levels above ground and two below.

Be careful with the name. China Resources Land also operates two sister malls in Nanchang under different sub-brands: MixC One (万象汇) and MixC Village / 万象天地 in central Honggutan. They are mid-tier and lifestyle malls, not the same property. The MixC described here is the one on Xuefu Avenue, sometimes called "Nanchang MixC" or "Honggutan MixC".

CR Land has highlighted that Nanchang MixC was certified as a bronze-level carbon-neutral commercial complex in late 2023 — the first large operating shopping centre in China to claim that status.

What's inside — and why it's worth a few hours

The mall carries around 400 brands, more than 150 of them first-in-Jiangxi. It targets the upper-middle market — closer to a polished urban department store than to a true international flagship-luxury arcade. (For hard luxury — Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier — you want Wushang MALL across the river by Bayi Square; MixC plays a different, more everyday game.)

What makes it worth a couple of hours is the place itself as much as any single shop. It's built as a run of oval, skylit atriums under a rippling glass roof, with wide curved galleries spiralling up the four retail levels and two below ground — bright, easy to read, and a genuine relief on a wet or sweltering Nanchang day. Escalators ring a central void, the lower-ground food hall pulls daylight from a sunken plaza, and there's clean, well-kept seating and bathrooms on every floor. For a traveller it's simply the most comfortable indoor stop in Honggutan: somewhere to cool off, eat well, pick up gifts, catch an original-soundtrack film, and tap your phone to pay for all of it.

Fashion, lifestyle, and beauty

Expect mainstream international fashion and accessible designer brands rather than top-tier luxury. The mall is strongest on women's fashion, lifestyle, and beauty rather than entry-luxe leather goods. As of early 2026 the headline maisons such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci have chosen the rival Wushang MALL across town for their Jiangxi flagships, not MixC. If hard luxury is the goal, Wushang MALL is the address; MixC's strength is breadth, comfort, and the Honggutan riverside setting.

Food and drink

The basement is a polished food hall with quick-service Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Sichuan, and dessert options, plus a Starbucks Reserve-style coffee strip. The fourth floor concentrates full-service restaurants — hot pot, Cantonese seafood, and Jiangxi-style cooking. For a sit-down meal that introduces local flavours before heading down to the wheel, the fourth floor is the better stop; for a quick, cheap graze, the basement does the job.

Edible souvenirs — what to take home

Olé in B1 is the easiest place in Honggutan to assemble gifts. Look for Jiangxi green tea from Wuyuan and Lushan Yunwu, packaged 白糖糕 (white sugar cake) and 瓦罐汤 (wazi soup) mixes, preserved Nanchang vegetables, and tinned local snacks. Stick to sealed dry goods if you're flying — they travel well and clear customs cleanly — and remember the 100 ml liquids rule for anything in your carry-on.

Children and family

There is a children's-zone cluster on the upper levels with indoor play, education, and toy retail, plus a child-friendly basement food court. Strollers are easy throughout and changing rooms are available on most levels — one reason the mall is a default rainy-afternoon plan for Nanchang families.

You can frame the wheel from inside MixC's riverside windows before you ride it — or simply walk out to its base.

When you've had your fill of the mall, the Star of Nanchang (南昌之星) is a few minutes' walk away across the greenway. It opened in May 2006 and was, briefly, the tallest Ferris wheel in the world: 160 metres total height, with a 153-metre wheel. It held that record until the Singapore Flyer opened at 165 metres in March 2008, so think of it as "one of the world's tallest" rather than chasing a ranking. It was rated a national 3A scenic area in 2025, and at night thousands of LED units turn the rim into a giant illuminated "clock".

Each rotation takes roughly 30 minutes. The wheel runs at walking pace and never fully stops, so you board and step off as your cabin passes the platform. There are 60 enclosed, air-conditioned cabins (up to 8 passengers each). The view in clear weather covers the Gan River, both city banks, the Bayi and Nanchang Bridges, the Twin Towers, and on a really clean evening the silhouette of Tengwang Pavilion across the water. Aim to board about 30 minutes before sunset, so the first half of your turn is golden-hour daylight and you come down with the city lights on.

The riverfront, when you're done

Step out of MixC toward the water and you reach Ganjiang Citizen Park (赣江市民公园), the free, never-gated riverside park along the Gan River's west bank. A flat, pram-friendly promenade — with open-lattice boardwalk (栈道) sections and shared bikes — runs about 3.2 km from the Qiushui Square (秋水广场) fountains in the north down to the Ferris wheel in the south. You're on the west bank, looking across the water at the older east-bank skyline crowned by the Tang-dynasty Tengwang Pavilion (滕王阁), framed by the Bayi and Nanchang Bridges.

The evening payoff a short walk from the mall: the lit wheel, the Gan River, the Bayi Bridge and the synchronised skyline — all free from the promenade.

After dark the riverfront turns on Nanchang's signature free spectacle — the "One River, Two Banks" (一江两岸) light show, when hundreds of buildings on both banks light up and animate in sync. It runs every evening, roughly 19:10–22:30 (longer on holidays, weather permitting); just stand on the embankment near the Bayi Bridge, Qiushui Square, or below the wheel. It's an evening experience — come midday and you get the views but none of the lights, on an open bank with little shade, so time a riverside finish for around sunset.

A summer note: in recent years the city has run a free, lifeguarded natural swimming beach right below the wheel — Motian Bay (摩天湾), part of the official 赣江 "Two Beaches, Seven Bays" (两滩七湾) network, with summer night markets and beach sports. It's a lively, very local scene — but treat it as a bonus, not a plan: it's a year-by-year city project, open only in season (recently roughly late June to early October, afternoons only) inside buoyed, staffed zones, and the current year's opening isn't always confirmed in advance. Check the Nanchang government or 南昌本地宝 before counting on a swim, and never swim outside the official beach or season — the Gan is a strong-current river with no lifeguards elsewhere and a real drowning history.

It's not the place for hard luxury (that's Wushang MALL), but it's the easiest, most comfortable few hours of indoor Nanchang — and it sits right by the river and the Ferris wheel.

What's the difference between MixC and Wushang MALL?

Come to MixC in Honggutan for breadth, comfort, a gourmet supermarket, and the riverside-and-wheel evening; go to Wushang MALL by Bayi Square for hard luxury (Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier). They serve different jobs, on opposite banks of the river.

How do I get to Nanchang MixC?

Take Metro Line 2 to Xuefudadao East (学府大道东) Station, Exit 2, then walk about 1.3 km (15–18 minutes) or grab a shared bike; the Star of Nanchang is right next door. For the Qiushui Square fountains and the north end of the riverside promenade, take Line 1 to Qiushui Square.

Is the Star of Nanchang Ferris wheel worth riding?

If you time it for sunset, yes — at around ¥50 for a roughly 30-minute rotation it gives you the best aerial view of the Gan River, the bridges, and both city banks, and you come down with the lights on. If you'd rather not pay or queue, the lit wheel seen from the riverside promenade — against the free "One River, Two Banks" light show — is arguably the better picture anyway.

Can you swim in the Gan River in Nanchang?

Only at the official, free, lifeguarded summer beaches — the 赣江 "Two Beaches, Seven Bays" (两滩七湾) network, of which Motian Bay (摩天湾) sits right by MixC and the wheel. They run only in season (recently roughly late June to early October), afternoons only, inside marked zones — and the project is renewed year by year, so confirm the current season's dates and opening first. Do not swim anywhere else or out of season: the river has strong currents, sudden drop-offs and no lifeguards, and wild swimming (野泳) is banned.
